Researching the Part D formulary – the next step

After you have narrowed your list to plans that meet your criteria, research each plan’s formulary. The formulary will not only include the list of all covered medications but will also indicate tier placement for each drug. If the plan covers some drugs in the coverage gap you can also make note of that as well.

The key to choosing the best Part D plan is the plan’s formulary. After all, if your drugs are not covered you’re wasting money. But there is also no reason to over insure with a high-premium enhanced formulary plan if you don’t require medications or take few generics. What may be best for a friend or family member may not be best for you.

When reviewing the formulary, don’t stop when you see that your drugs are included. Compare the tier placement of each drug against any other plan you may be considering. It’s not uncommon for drugs to be placed in different tiers by different companies. The tier placement of a drug will determine how much your copayment or coinsurance amount will be.

When comparing Delaware Medicare Part D plans it will be necessary to visit each plan’s website (once you have narrowed your list) to research their respective formularies.
