Hawaii Medicare Part D Plans
Complete listing of Hawaii Medicare Part D plans
There are 25 Medicare Part D plans available in Hawaii for 2012. Researching plans and choosing wisely is well advised because switching plans at times other than the annual Open Enrollment Period is limited.
You can receive your Part D benefits one of two ways. you can join a Medicare Advantage plan such as AARP Medicare Complete which includes Medicare drug coverage or you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan. The following list is for stand-alone Part D plans. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans which are available County by County, Part D plans are available Statewide.
If you are newly eligible for Medicare or if you are entitled to a Special Enrollment Period you should submit an application for a Part D plan if you intend to remain with original Medicare or if you are going to purchase a Medicare supplement policy. Medicare supplement policies do not include drug coverage.
The following list of Part D plans available in Hawaii is in table form so you can make easy comparisons. Compare premiums, deductibles, types of plan, whether or not there is extra coverage in the gap and the Medicare star rating. See the bottom of this article for some important notes on choosing the best Part D plan for your circumstances.

Review the Part D formulary to find your best plan
Too many people make the mistake of choosing a plan based on premium alone. Although a plan with a low premium may be your best option there’s also a good chance that it is not. Remember, switching plans mid-year is very limited. so you must get it right the first time.
The most important consideration when choosing a plan is whether or not all your drugs are covered. If your drugs are not covered the lowest premium will not be of value. The Part D formulary is the list of drugs covered by each plan. All plans have unique formularies. Basic formularies will offer less choice than enhanced formularies.
Start by narrowing your choices from the list above. For instance, if you want a premium in a certain range or know that you need an enhanced formulary and what extra gap coverage you can locate those plans. After you have a couple plans in mind you can visit the plan’s website and review the formulary.
You can also search for plans at medicare.gov by entering your drugs and getting filtered list. But you should still check the formulary against your other choices to see if there is a difference in tier placement. Tier placement varies from one plan to the next and can have a significant bearing on your out-of-pocket costs.
Finding the best Hawaii Medicare Part D plan for your needs is easy if you take methodical approach to your research.
