A quick search of medicare.gov will yield results for Medicare plan in any desired zip code but not in any logical order and not in a format that will allow you to make simple comparisons. There are 33 Illinois Medicare Part D plan available.

The following list (in table form) will allow you to quickly compare plans based on monthly premium, annual deductible, type of plan (basic or enhanced), whether or not there is gap coverage and Medicare Star ratings.

Reviewing the list can give you a starting point in your search to find the most suitable plan. Once you narrow your list you can visit plan websites to research formularies, pharmacy networks and learn about mail order options or any ancillary benefits.

Keep in mind that there are two ways to receive Medicare drug benefits. You can enroll in a stand-alone plan or join a Medicare Advantage plan that includes Part D coverage. If you are going to stay with original Medicare or purchase a Medigap policy your only option will be to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan.

The Part D formulary makes the plan

The above list is a great way to compare plan features side-by-side, but don’t make the mistake of choosing the plan with the lowest premium and assume that you got the best deal. There is a lot more that goes into the total cost than the monthly premium. Here are some other features you should review:
