What’s not in the list

Medicare Part D drug plans include a lot of variables. Other than the criteria contained in the tables above, the formulary is the most important feature of any plan. After all, if your drugs are not covered, it’s not going to do you much good. But there are other considerations as well.

Drug Tier Placement

Drugs are often listed in different tiers from one company to the next. It’s not uncommon for one plan to include a drug in tier 2 while another plan includes the same drug in tier 3. Tiers are directly related to your out-of-pocket costs. Be sure to take this into consideration when comparing Medicare drug plans.

Copayment and Coinsurance Amounts

When the Part D program was initially introduced in 2006 most plans had set copayment amounts for most tiers or all but the highest tier. This is no longer the case. Many plans require a percentage of the drug cost, also known as coinsurance, for each drug and often for multiple tiers. Not knowing what a plan pays for a drug makes it very difficult to calculate your prescription costs.

Preferred and Non-Preferred Pharmacies

Many Part D plans now offer lower copayments or coinsurance amounts if you use preferred pharmacies. Pharmacies are usually large regional chains like Rite Aid or national pharmacies such as Walmart. Consider the overall plan before you jump at a price leader.

Mail Order and Ancillary Benefits

If plans that you are comparing are very similar the mail order benefit or the extras may be the tipping point. Some plans will deliver tier 1 drugs through the mail for a $0 copay and to attract members some plans will include discounts on additional health and wellness products and services.

If you take all the above information into account you should be able to find the best Indiana Medicare Part D plan to suit your needs. Keep in mind that plans are good for one calendar year and you will have the opportunity to drop, switch or enroll in a plan during the annual Open Enrollment Period which begins October 15th and ends December 7th each year.
