Finding the most suitable Kentucky Medicare Part D plan
Few things related to your health are more important that choosing the right Medicare Part D plan. But given the fact that there are 31 Medicare Part D plans available in Kentucky for 2012 it’s not always easy to be certain that you are choosing the right plan.
All Part D plans include different features. It’s obvious that monthly premiums vary widely but other features are not as evident. Everything from which drugs are covered to which tier individual drugs are placed in can have a large bearing on your potential out-of-pocket costs.
Making a side-by-side comparison of Part D plans is easy with the following list. Compare premiums, deductibles, plan type (basic or enhanced), gap coverage and Medicare Star ratings. The first step is narrowing your list prior to digging deeper into plan formularies, mail order options, pharmacy networks and any ancillary benefits available.
The list below includes only stand-alone Part D drug plans. Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage as well. If you are choosing to receive your health benefits from original Medicare or a Medigap policy, choose a plan from the list below.

Enrolling in a Kentucky Part D plan
Once you have found a plan that suits your needs and budget you will need to submit an application. It’s important that you choose a plan when you first become eligible for Medicare. To enroll in a plan you must be enrolled in both Parts A and B, live in the plan’s service area (your State) and have a valid enrollment period available.
Enrollment Period Include:
- When you first become eligible for Medicare. Submit an application from 2 months from the 1st of the month in which you turn 65, the month you turn 65 and 2 months after the month you turn 65.
- You can enroll, switch or drop a Part D plan during the annual Open enrollment Period which begins each year on October 15th and ends December 7th.
- Enroll during any Special Enrollment Period that you may have available. Generally during times of a change in status or if you receive extra help in relation to your Part D coverage.
You can enroll online, over the phone, through the mail or meet with an insurance agent. Part D coverage begins the 1st of the following month from when the application was completed. Follow these simple steps and you should have no trouble finding a suitable Part D plan from the 31 available in Kentucky.
