Compare Maine Medicare Part D plansMaine Medicare Part D

There are 28 stand-alone Part D plans available in Maine for 2012. Part D plans available in Maine have major differences in benefits and doing your research can mean the difference between having adequate coverage or not.

Too often a plan is chosen based on premium alone or because it was recommended by a well intentioned friend or family member. But this is a case where the lowest premium doesn’t always mean the least annual out-of-pocket costs and there is no one size fits all plan.

The problem with comparing plans is finding all plans listed side by side with a orderly breakdown of features. Even the search results for Part D plans at medicare.gov leave you scratching your head when trying to compare features.

The following list of Medicare drug plans available in Maine gives you information you’ll need to narrow your search. Compare; premiums, deductibles, plan type (basic or enhanced), gap coverage and Medicare Star ratings. When you have found plans that meet your general criteria, visit plan websites to research formularies, pharmacy networks and mail order options.

Why the Part D formulary is key

The simple truth is that no matter how low the premium or how convenient the pharmacy network, if your drugs are not covered, you have made a poor choice. A plan’s formulary is the list of covered drugs. Plan formularies can vary widely. Even within a specific plan type (enhanced for example) you can find significant differences in which drugs are covered and which are not.

After you have narrowed your list to criteria which is important to you ( gap coverage or a certain Star rating for example) you should visit each plan’s website to complete your research.

After you have found plans that include your required medications, you should compare drug tiers between plans for your specific drugs. Not all drugs are placed in the same tier, which can impact your out-of-pocket costs. The Part D formulary will also list any drugs that are covered in the donut hole.

A Part D plan available in Maine will allow you to fill your prescriptions if you travel to another State, so it’s also important to learn about the pharmacies that are in-network. Also, compare mail order options and check to see if any plans include any ancillary benefits such as discounts on health and wellness products and services.
