Why Part D formularies matter

There are several things to consider when choosing a Part D plan but none is more important than the formulary. The formulary is the list of drugs which are covered by the plan. Formularies are either basic or enhanced.

Basic Formulary

A basic formulary will include the most popular drugs taken by Medicare beneficiaries but may not include less common brand-name medications. If all your drugs are covered by a plan with a basic formulary that you find acceptable, you can enroll in that plan knowing that you are not paying more than necessary by joining a plan with an enhanced formulary.

Enhanced Formulary

A plan with an enhanced formulary will include all the drugs of the basic plan from the same company and then some. If you have a chronic health condition or require less popular name brand drugs you may require a plan with an enhanced formulary. Many enhanced formulary plans do not include an annual deductible and may offer additional coverage while you are in the donut hole.

A plan’s formulary will also indicate which tier each drug is listed in. The same drug may be listed in different tiers by different companies. So it’s not enough just to be certain that your drug is covered. Comparing tier placement of drugs may allow you to save some money. Several factor go into determining your ultimate annual cost and if you are going to find the most suitable Maryland Part D plan you should be prepared to do your homework.
