Montana Medicare Part D Plans
Do you need to enroll in a Part D plan in Montana?
Enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan is optional but is highly recommended even if you are not currently taking medications. Just because you are not currently required to take any prescription drugs is not enough of a reason to justify not making a small investment. After all, it’s called insurance fro a reason!
Another reason you should choose one of the 37 Part D plans available in Montana is to avoid having a late enrollment penalty should you decide to enroll later on. To avoid having a late enrollment penalty be sure to enroll during your initial open enrollment period when you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B.
Choosing a plan will require a comparison of plan features beyond just looking at monthly premium. With different premiums, deductibles and out of pocket expenses when filling a prescription, Part D has a lot of moving parts.
The following list of all 37 Part D plans available in Montana for 2012 is a good place to start, but you should dig a little deeper and research the plan’s formulary to be certain that all your medicines are covered. Joining a plan without having all your drugs covered can be a costly affair.

Part D formulary is the key to choosing the right plan
As you can see from the list above, a Part D plan is considered to either be a basic or enhanced plan. For the most part, the distinction is made by whether or not the formulary includes just the most basic drugs or whether the formulary is expanded to include less common and more expensive medications.
The enhanced formulary includes far more drug choices than the basic, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is your best choice. For instance, if all your drugs are included in a basic formulary you may want to save some money on monthly premiums and choose a basic plan.
On the other hand, you may be considering one of the enhanced plans available in Montana because of the likelihood of not having a deductible and a greater possibility that you will have some drug coverage in the donut hole.
Weighing cost against the benefits is a big part of choosing a Medicare drug plan. What ever you do, be certain that the plan you choose includes all of your required medications in order to have a better idea of your overall annual costs.
